Shareware tends to come in one of two categories:
- Limited feature set, forever
- Unlimited feature set, limitied time of use
An example given above is graphics software - one I have seen (many years ago, cannot remember the name of it) would let you do everything for an unlimited time, but every image that was eventually produced had a watermakr of the company over it, so it could not be used for anything other than trying out the software.
As an alternate to Symantec Antivuris, why not use AVG? It has enough features (ie email scanning, automatic updates, etc) for personal use, and is available free of monetary charge (but it is closed source). The link below will take youantivirus shareware download to the AVG download page (and explain what you do and don't get for the free version).
shareware is usually limited in its use as the free version.
usually you will either have just a set ammount of time (typically 30 days) to try out the software, possibly with all features enabled before either purchasing the full version, or not being able to use the trial again.
or the fre eversion may have limted capabilities, some graphis shareware will allow you to test out all of the capabilities o fthe program, but not allow you to save your work, unless you pay for the full version
that being said, there are some great shareware programs out there that have free versions that work quite well the two most prevelant I know of, are: Spyware Search and Destroy
and Adaware
Shareware is a marketing method for computer software. Shareware software is typically obtained free of charge, either by downloading from the Internet or on magazine cover-disks. A user tries out the program, and thus shareware has also been known as "try before you buy". A shareware program is accompanied by a request for payment, and the software's distribution liceantivirus shareware downloadnse often requires such a payment.
Free/open source software and shareware are similar in that they can be obtained and used without monetary cost. Usually shareware differs from free/open source software in that requests of voluntary shareware fees are made, often within the program itself, and in that source code for shareware programs is generally not available in a form that would allow others to extend the program. Notwithstanding that tradition, some free/open source software authors ask for voluntary donations, although there is no requirement to do so. Free/open source software is usually compatible with the strict ASP shareware guidelines.
Sometimes, paying the fee and obtaining a password results in access to expanded features, documentation, or support. In some cases, unpaid use of the software is limited in time or in features — in which case the software is vernacularly called crippleware. Some shareware items require no payment; just an email address, so that the supplier can use this address for their own purposes
shareware is software thats free to download, but you can not modify it., i think
